Add Your Rental Car to your ExpressToll Account and Save

ExpressToll customers can add a rental car license plate number to their toll account. To ensure the tolls are properly billed to the account, customers must follow a few easy steps.

  1. Add car to the account BEFORE driving on the toll road. Make sure to list the vehicle as a rental on your account. Specific make and model will not be needed.
  2. Include a start and end date when the car drives the road. 

Adding a rental plate to an ExpressToll account allows customers to pay the tolls only and avoid the additional administrative fees charged by rental car companies for driving their rental car on a toll road.

Some rental car agencies equip their cars with a non-removable ExpressToll transponder. If so, the customer is automatically opted-in to the rental agency’s toll plan. Please contact the rental car agency directly with questions.

Rental vehicles not properly added to an account are billed through the rental car agency.

Rental Car Tolls Billed Through Rental Car Agency

All major rental car agencies register their vehicles with ExpressToll. The rental car agency will bill the tolls to the customer based on the terms written in the rental agreement. In addition, rental car agencies may apply additional administrative fees for toll road usage.

Rental Car FAQs

Do I need a transponder in my rental car?
You do not need a transponder in your rental car to drive on Colorado toll roads. If you are not an ExpressToll customer you will automatically become a License Plate Toll customer when you drive a rental on a Colorado toll road. Cameras will photograph the front and rear license plate and a statement will be generated and sent to the rental car agency. You will receive this bill from the rental car agency.

How can I save money on Colorado toll roads?
By signing up for an ExpressToll account you can receive up to a 35% discount on toll rates in Colorado. If you do not sign up for an ExpressToll account, you will be charged at the normal License Plate Toll rates.

Why are License Plate Toll rates more expensive than ExpressToll rates?
The operational cost to verify and bill License Plate Toll customers is significantly higher than it is for ExpressToll customers. Therefore, the toll rate for a License Plate Toll customer is higher.

Are out-of-state cars charged more?
Out of state cars are not charged more on Colorado toll roads.

Do out-of-state toll stickers or passes work in Colorado?
Out of state transponders or toll passes do not currently work in Colorado.

Do toll charges vary for extended car rentals?
ExpressToll charges for rental cars remain the same regardless of the length of the rental. However, rental car agency administrative fees may vary. Please speak to your rental car agency to learn more about their fees.

What should I do if I regularly use Colorado toll roads?
If you regularly use Colorado toll roads, you should sign up for an ExpressToll account! By quickly updating your account information online at ExpressToll.com, or by calling customer service at (303) 537-3470, you can easily add or remove a rental car from your ExpressToll account. How long does it take for toll charges to bill?
Due to the various steps and measures that are taken to identify license plates, it can take two to six weeks for the billing to process. If you are an ExpressToll customer, toll charges will be deducted from your pre-paid ExpressToll account automatically.
